TÖMER Levels and Scope
TÖMER follows the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and teaches Turkish across six levels. Each level corresponds to roughly 200-240 contact hours and 6-10 weeks of intensive study.
- A1 (Beginner): Alphabet, basic patterns, simple sentences
- A2 (Elementary): Daily dialogues, shopping, asking directions
- B1 (Intermediate): Speaking fluency starts, reading newspapers
- B2 (Upper-Intermediate): Academic texts, opinion exchange
- C1 (Advanced): Academic comprehension and production
- C2 (Mastery): Near-native command
The minimum requirement for university admission is usually B2 or C1. Programs such as medicine, law and engineering require C1. Türkiye Scholarships students typically progress from A1 to C1 in a one-year preparatory class.
C1 Exam Structure
The TÖMER C1 exam typically takes two or three days and consists of four core sections. Total exam time is approximately four hours; written and oral parts may be held on different days.
1. Reading (Comprehension)
Duration: 75-90 minutes. 4-5 texts with 5-8 questions each. Academic articles, newspaper reports, essays and narrative excerpts. Beyond direct factual questions you face main idea, tone, inference and vocabulary items.
2. Writing
Duration: 60-90 minutes. Two tasks: a short text (email, report or letter, around 100-150 words) and a long composition (essay or argumentative writing, 250-350 words). Topics are academic, social or current. Fluency, structure, vocabulary range and grammar are scored.
3. Listening
Duration: 30-40 minutes. 3-4 listening passages: news bulletin, academic lecture, dialogues. Each passage carries 5-8 questions. C1 tests accents, irony and fast speech.
4. Speaking
Duration: 15-20 minutes, individual interview. Conducted by a single examiner or a panel of two. Three parts: self introduction, a 4-5 minute monologue on a given topic, and a discussion with the panel on a social or academic theme. Intonation, pronunciation, grammar and content coherence are scored.
The passing score is typically 60 out of 100; some universities set their own thresholds at 65-75.
